Fiction Favorites by Autumn
In case you didn't already know, I love to read. You could definitely describe my reading style as intense. I enjoy all sorts of books, especially fiction. I feel like books are great tools to help one grow in the virtues needed for personal character growth and missionary discipleship.
Now, not all books are created equal. Over the years I've sorted through my library and condensed it to only books that I feel have good morals and will help me become a better person, and a better missionary. With that in mind, I know the holidays are coming up, so I thought I would list some of my favorite fiction reads in case anyone is wanting gift ideas for the kids/adults in their lives.
All of the following books/series are full of fun, adventure, suspense, and good character traits as well as life lessons. They have all strengthened my character and faith in various ways. Many of them are deeply spiritual on an allegorical level, allowing the reader to connect better with God through stories. I really hope you'll read them and enjoy them as much as I have!
The Wingfeather Saga - I was introduced to these books by some of our good friends, and ended up reading the entire series in only three days. The books are full of adventure and suspense, as well as really good life lessons and morals. Dive into the intriguing world of Aerwiar with siblings Janner, Tink, and Leeli as they learn secrets about stones and fallen kingdoms as well as what true sacrifice really is.
The Lord of the Rings - A lot of people get overwhelmed by this series, but I truly believe it's one of the greatest works of fiction ever written. It's something you have to stick with, but the perilous quest of hobbits (with help from many, many, friends) is one that should not be missed.
The Chronicles of Narnia - A few years ago on a road trip, my family enjoyed listening to the audiobooks of this series. We instantly fell in love with the magic and with of C.S Lewis, as well as the characters and the world he had created. Narnia is a mystical land full to the brim with enchanting people, fauns, and stories.
A Wrinkle In Time Quintet - These books are full of parody and wit. They'll surely keep you on the edge of your seat as you discover science fiction in a meaningful way.
The Green Ember Series - Adventure fiction much like the Wingfeather Saga, except that it's based around bunnies with swords. You might laugh, but I seriously enjoyed reading this series.
The Bush Boys Series - The bush boys are a select group of cousins and friends who have all sorts of wacky adventures in the Australian bush. I could especially relate to the characters, many of who come from large homeschooling families and are all passionate about the outdoors.
Little Women/Little Men/Jo's Boys - I personally think that Louisa May Alcott's books would be greatly enjoyed by young girls and boys alike. The characters are full of life, joy, and a healthy dose of mischief wherever it's needed. Besides the laughter, the characters learn life lessons and how to fight their faults (with God's help).
The Mysterious Benedict Society - Four special children are called to work undercover and discover a plot to take over the world. Once the plot is uncovered, it's up to them to stop it. The Mysterious Benedict Society has to lean on each other and work together in order to do so.
The Screwtape Letters - Maybe this one is a little bit more of a mature read. These letters between Uncle Screwtape and his nephew Wormwood (both demons) captivate their audience as they try to succeed in corrupting souls. By reading the letters, one is encouraged to find that no matter what they come up with, it's not enough to keep their clients from God.
The Great Divorce - This is a shorter read, but captivating nonetheless. Join a soul on a riveting bus ride and adventure from Hell to Heaven.
