School for the Lord's Service by Gianna
Have you ever heard of the Rule of Saint Benedict? If you haven't, I am here to explain.
First of all, we have a small book of his rules. It would take me days to write it all out, so...uh, I think I will just tell you the main rule... Yes that is what I shall do.
#1 Main Rule: St. Benedict says, "All things, eat, drink, play, work, should be done in moderation." Another thing he found was the "School for the Lord's Service.'' We also have our own rule but... I shall talk about that some other time. Anyway, we homeschool, and, while we're at it, we make it as holy as we can. So, I will go through all of my subjects and rate them.
Spelling:
This subject is one of my favorites. The words are mixed holy words such as "God, chapel, Holy, angel", and the other words are usually words such as "dog, jump, spring." But, what I like most about Spelling is the tests, not just because you get "Turkish Delight for thy majesty" (quote from "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe") if you do a good job. This subject is given the rating "good."
Faith and Life:
This one is about the Bible and other holy things. How it works is you read the chapter, then you have questions and then you have a workbook. This is rated "okay." Not that I don't like learning about God, it's just the workbook. He he he.
Our Friends From Other Lands:
This one is about saints, children, and people from different countries. First, you learn about the country, then you read a story, and then you have questions. This one is probably my favorite, so it is given the rating "delightful."
Science:
I have two science books. "How to Dress a Duck": This one is about ducks, and other stories from science. This one is given the rating "interesting." The other one, Behold and See, is about what Science is, technology, matter, weight, and more. This one is rated, "okay."
Language of God:
This one is grammar. What I like about it is they have holy sentences in the workbook, like "When Holy Mass is finished, I thank Jesus with a full heart." There's really nothing more to say about it, but it is given the rating "interesting."
Reading:
For my reading comprehension, I read "Artie and the Princess." It's about a princess and a dragon. I read a chapter and then have questions. This one is rated "fun."
Math:
This one isn't just "1+1." It's hard. So, it is given the rating "UNBEARBLE AGONY!"
Morning Time:
We read a holy saint book, and sing a hymn, and do a character trait, and memorize a bible verse all together.
Prayer and Service:
We also do works of mercy, fast from meat and treats, and have a Holy Hour every Friday, and help out at a food pantry sometimes, called Crosslines. Every day we go to Mass, we praise and worship before eating, we pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, we have 15 minutes of Scripture, and we pray Night Prayer or pray a rosary. I help my family by trying to make some deposits on the "Emotional Bank Account List," instead of withdrawals. Examples are: not lying to people, not calling names, or helping other people by doing their chores for them or going the extra mile.
So, while we have fun, we try to make our school as holy as possible. A quote from St Benedict is "Ora et labora: Pray and work."
Thank you for reading this blogpost. Hope y'all enjoyed it.
God bless,
