Our Rule of Six by Cameron
In this blog post, I want to tell you a little bit more about our homeschooling that we call "Our School for the Lord's Service," which my sister did a blog post about. Our schooling is centered on something that we call our "Rule Of Six," which is based on St. Benedict's rule for his order, the Benedictines. This is basically our family mission statement. Here I will list the rules and elaborate a little bit.
Rule of Six:
1. Missionary Discipleship
We try to be disciples of Jesus and make disciples of Jesus.
2. Meaningful Work
Some examples are our school, our family, our parish/diocese, our community, the U.S, and the world
3. Do What Gives Life and Bears Fruit
We have recreation, fun, fellowship, delights, a support system, rest, self-care, healing, encounters with beauty, nature, fresh air, exercise, margin, flexibility, spontaneity, and growth opportunities
4. Show Humility in Leadership
We try to instruct, coach, and discipline with prayer and humility,
5. Be of One Heart and Mind
We try to live together in humility and reject pride, stop and pray, preserve unity and connection, show appreciation and gratitude for each other, find the common good, say only what is helpful for building others up, use "I" statements to express a positive need, accept contradiction, correction, and discipline cheerfully, use respectful tone, words, and body language, validate others' feelings and show empathy, incorporate feedback, show remorse and make amends for our offenses.
6. Go the Extra Mile
We try to manage and communicate our responsibilities effectively, pick up, keep order, volunteer for work, cooperate, take up the work cheerfully, look around for needs to fill, focus on others first, and ask "Who or what can use my attention?" instead of focusing on our own interests - remember that it is more blessed to give than to receive.
